• Older gas Yamahas and E-Z-GOs with long service histories: carburetor-era machines that reward a mechanic who knows them, and that need regular tune-ups (oil, plugs, filters, belt) to keep starting on the first crank.
• Multiple-owner electric carts on their second, third, or fourth battery pack. On a cart like that, we load-test before quoting: sometimes the pack really is done, and sometimes a $150 solenoid or corroded cable is masquerading as battery death.
• Repair-or-retire judgment calls. An honest one matters more on a 20-year-old cart than anywhere else. When a repair costs more than the cart is worth, we say so, no sales floor here, so no cart-sale agenda behind the advice.

The location helps too. Spanish Springs is the north anchor of the trail network, with nightly music and cart parking all around the square, so carts on this side still log real daily miles to the square, the rec centers, and the shopping on 441. Daily miles mean brake and tire wear, same as everywhere in the community.

Beyond the Villages line: Water Oak, Harbor Hills, and the 27/441 corridor

Where a cart can and cannot go in Lady Lake

Lady Lake writes its own cart rules, under Town Ordinance 17-3, and they are stricter than many owners assume. As the town’s police chief has summarised them:

• Carts run only on designated streets inside recognised “golf cart communities.” The town commission recognises the community, and the community posts signs showing which streets and areas carts may use. A town street is not open to carts just because it is quiet.
• Some roads are off limits entirely, to drive on or to cross: US 27/441, CR 466, Griffin Avenue, Rolling Acres Road, and any road posted at 35 mph or higher. The police chief put fines for crossing them at $160 and up.
• Who may drive. The chief’s 2018 summary gave a minimum age of 14, but state law has since replaced that. Since October 1, 2023, F.S. 316.212(7) bars anyone under 18 from driving a cart on a public road or street without at least a valid learner’s license, and anyone 18 or older without government-issued photo ID. The chief also noted that anyone whose driver’s license is cancelled, suspended or revoked may not drive a cart on any public road or street.
• Carts follow traffic law and can be ticketed the same way a car can.

The state line sits on top of that: a cart built or modified to go faster than 20 mph stops being a golf cart under Florida law and becomes a low-speed vehicle, which must be titled, plated and insured with working lights and signals.
